IB MYP

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme

A global perspective is coming to Lawton Chiles Middle Academy! The school is adopting the Middle Years Programme (MYP), a program for middle schoolers from the highly acclaimed International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). MYP will be incorporated school-wide. Some of the key concepts include the IB Learner Profile, a challenging curriculum, and the idea of international-mindedness. Common themes will link subjects to make learning more relevant. Check out the school and you will find evidence of our focus on the world we live in: the display case of items from around the world next to the main office, the photos of families and their possessions, and you can't miss the huge world map on the first floor!

Like the high school IB program, MYP is operated and acknowledged worldwide. Both the middle and high school programs promote global understanding and encourage student self-direction, critical thinking and collaboration. Both encourage parent involvement and community service. While the high school program can lead to college credits and an internationally-recognized IB diploma, the middle school program does not. MYP does, however, provide a seamless transition into challenging high school programs, including IB, AP, and other demanding coursework. Students completing the Lawton Chiles Middle Academy IB MYP will earn preferential points on their applications to the Bartow International Baccalaureate School or the Haines City IB School.

MYP students will be encouraged to see the interrelatedness among all areas of learning: language, humanities, mathematics, arts, sciences, technology, and physical education. In addition to traditional academics, students are required to take Spanish, P.E., technology and both visual and performing art classes. Performing arts includes band, chorus, strings, guitar, and T.V. productions.

To be fully accredited by IBO, the school will go through a three-year process which includes teacher training. “The school’s basic curriculum won’t change, but it will incorporate common threads. It will allow teachers to look through a common set of lenses, and it will allow students to consider issues and authentic programs in their widest scope,” said Howard Butler Yank, AP/IB programs specialist.

Lawton Chiles Middle Academy will be the first school in Polk County and one of just a handful in the Southeast to offer the Middle Years Programme.

IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
