eCybermission 1st Place Regional Winners

Three LCMA students have won eCybermission's regional competition sponsored by the US Army. The project was centered around the endangered gopher tortoise. These students and their classmates worked to help find a home for 23 tortoises that needed a new home, their land is being developed. Through their research they learned that reclaimed phosphate land would make a good home for these tortoises. They surveyed the land for FDEP and created a GIS map to help in the permitting process. The tortoises will have a new home in Homeland on reclaimed phosphate land.

With new technology emerging on the scene and new technology related jobs being established that impact many areas, the need to collaborate within our district’s schools was recognized.

The Shining Star Award began as a project to promote collaboration among the technology leaders in Polk County Schools. The LCMA Shining Star Team received a Gold Award from the Polk County School Board Media Services Department on May 1, 2007.

The judges evaluated five classroom projects that are rich in technology integration. LCMA submitted the following technology-rich lessons:

  • “What’s my line?” using TI-83 wireless graphing calculator system

  •  “Correlation Project” using Excel spreadsheets

  • “Where do we go from here?” using GPS technology

  • “Inspired Words” using Inspiration software

  • “Mission Possible” using internet research and Inspiration software

In addition to using technology in the classroom, the projects were evaluated by the team’s collaboration with all the staff members involved.

LCMA’s web site also received an Exemplary Web Presence Award. (One of ten schools in the district.)

LCMA received prizes along with our awards. Two LCD Projectors, two wireless slate boards, a digital camera and Photoshop software, and a Smart Board for a classroom. Congratulations to the Shining Star Team:
